Materials
I use the Blick Studio or Faber-Castell 9000 pencil. I found that they are both consistent in application and any variations are easy to refine. the values are very consistent; they also have excellent progressive range from 4H through to 4B.
The two pencils performed well using the end of a kneaded rubber making a thin erased line that worked well through all the grades of pencil.

The choice of paper that I use is of course the other important part of the process. I use a Bristol Strathmore velum 300 series 270g/m^2. I find that the texture of the paper not too dominant. I love and value the texture that this paper gives especially with my technique, It helps me to refine or utilise the texture to do what I want it to do. I can use it to be very smooth or be a little more heavy in areas that I want it to be in. The peaks and troughs of the paper are not uniform; they are random making it a beautiful surface to work on with dealing with the texture of skin whether it would be an old man, baby or a piece of wood.
Style and Technique
I prefer to carefully layer my pencil strokes as this not only enhances the tone contour of the portrait but also allows me to maintain control over the entire piece from beginning to end.
Creating depth and dimension to transform a flat sheet of white paper into a three-dimensional illusion is crucial for a successful portrait. This is accomplished by ensuring that the transition from edges to value is preserved and that the light to dark areas are smoothly graded, all aiming for a realistic outcome
