As an artist committed to continuous improvement, I have recently come to appreciate the remarkable qualities of coloured pencils. Their unique quality has revealed new possibilities in my drawings, allowing me to add depth and dimension each of my pictures.
While I have a strong affinity for coloured pencils, pastel pencils have emerged as my preferred medium. They combine the soft, blendable qualities of pastels with the convenience of a pencil format, making them a joy to work with. I also find pastel pencils to be particularly effective due to their precision, which enhances control and minimizes mess.
In my view, pastels are an exceptional choice for colourists, offering some of the most vibrant hues available in any artistic medium, especially when applied to toned pastelmat. The high-quality pigments in pastels ensure both longevity and brilliance in my artwork. Furthermore, pastel pencils facilitate the swift coverage of large areas, enriching the creative process.
For me the journey into the captivating world of colour is without doubt a path that gives me a great source of enjoyment.​​​
Materials I use
Pastelmat paper
A lovely and smooth, exceedingly fine toothed paper. Very popular with coloured pencil artists (this paper used with Faber Castell Polychromos pencils is a match made in heaven!) and pastel artists alike.
Pitt Pastel Pencils
With their very compact oil-and wax-free pastel leads, are also used by artists not only as the perfect complement to pastel crayons for elaborating fine details, but also on their own and are particularly suited to those artists who perhaps aren’t keen on pastel dust and dirty hands!
The lead contains a high level of pigment, making the pencils ideally suited both to drawing lines and shading, as well as blending and merging into delicate colour transitions.
Caran D'Ache Pencils
These are a lovely creamy texture which is a joy to work with. the core is firm enough not to crumble when sharpening with a sharp scalpel so there is not the wastage that you can get with a cheaper product. The colour range in this box is good and the colours are vibrant and colourfast. Highly recommended.
